Erin Mills is bounded by Dundas north to Britannia, Credit River west to Winston Churchill.
Erin Mills is one of Mississauga’s most populated and fastest growing areas. The focal point of the area is the Erin Mills Town Centre, a popular shopping centre. This area also houses Mississauga’s largest hospital, Credit Valley Hospital and the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus.
Erin Mills Mississauga is home to one of the largest parks in Mississauga; Erindale Park. The park runs along the credit river from Dundas Street up to Burnhamthorpe Road. Access to the park is from Dundas Street.
There is a community centre with a library and a pool. The Erin Mills Twin Arena is home to the Erindale Spitfires and the Mississauga Terriers hockey teams.
Aboriginal peoples were the first inhabitants of this area. European settlement of the Erin Mills began in the very early 1800s. By the mid-19th century the area was entirely agricultural land and served by the nearby villages of Erindale and Streetsville, which were located just to the east along the Credit River.
Beginning in the 1950s, Canadian entrepreneur, E.P. Taylor began buying farmland for future housing development by Canadian Equity and Development Limited, which owned Don Mills Development Corp. In 1969 Don Mills Development Corp. announced its plans to build a "New Town" in four phases. The first two phases - "Erin Mills South" and "Erin Mills West" - today form the nucleus of the Erin Mills community.
The name 'Erin Mills' was the creation of land developers, likely for its close proximity to Erindale. The second part Mills makes reference to the many grist mills that were operating on the banks of the nearby Credit River.
Real Estate in Erin Mills, Mississauga
Erin Mills has a mixture of older neighborhoods and new subdivisions with real estate for every budget. Housing in Erin Mills ranges from condominium apartments and townhouses, through to semi-detached homes, and some very large custom houses closer to Mississauga Road.
Erin Mills Town Centre is a large mall located Erin Mills Parkway and Eglinton Avenue. South Common Mall is a smaller mall located at Erin Mills and Burnhamthorpe.
The six-lane mostly divided Erin Mills Parkway traverses Erin Mills in a more or less north-south direction. Winston Churchill Boulevard also runs north-south to the west of the parkway. Most of the newer development is to the west of this road.
Highway 403 intersects the area west-east and serves as the main highway route to access either Oakville to the west or Toronto to the east.
The area is served by Mississauga Transit, Oakville Transit and commuter bus service via GO Transit.
